In light of my recent diagnosis (read about that here), I have been so focused on what is going wrong, I need to take a minute and focus on what is good.

1. Jared. I am so thankful for a sweet sympathetic spouse who thinks I am the best ever. He reminds me constantly of the beauty he sees when he looks at me. He reminds me of the good in our lives when I'm struggling and just see the pain. He is a wonderful father who takes time with his kids to talk about what matters as well as being fun and playful. We have been together since we were 15 and he knows me better than I know myself. I am so very thankful for my Jared.

2. Our Children. I am thankful that this diagnosis came after we were done having children. If this had come 10 years sooner our family would look very different. I can't have children on these medications due to dangers of severe birth defects. If this disease had to come, I am thankful it came after all 5 children are already here and old enough to be self sufficient.

3. Our Church. The outpouring of love and support from our church family has been such an encouragement. I am thankful for the cards, prayers, hugs, and phone calls. Ministry can be so hard at times but this season has been a reminder of how wonderful life in the ministry can be. I am so thankful for the family God has granted through this church.

4. Worship. I have always enjoyed singing. When I sing I feel closer to God. Being a part of worship during this has been times of reprieve. Moments when my focus is taken off of self and put where it belongs. I don't think about anything but the words and the music. I absolutely love being a part of this ministry and I'm thankful I have been able to continue.

5. Friends. When Jared and I were looking for a church 15 years ago I prayed that wherever we went I would be able to find friends, to have community. The most common complaints from those in full time ministry is loneliness and isolation. I love my friends and feel I have people in my life that fit all kinds of roles. Thank you for loving me when I'm unlovely. Being patient with me when I'm self focused and emotional. Thank you for reminding me of the good and admonishing me when I need it. Thank you for being my community, for being an answer to my prayer from all those years ago.

6. Family. I am thankful for family on both sides that have called and text and shown love and concern. I have called on you for prayers and sympathy. Thank you for not tiring of me when I need to talk through the same thing for the 100th time. Thank you for letting me talk about all the gory details and offering support and love in return.

7. Modern Medicine. I currently have 9 prescriptions in addition to vitamins I take daily. If you do some research you will see that it wasn't that long ago that people diagnosed with auto-immune arthritis' were doomed to a life of pain and deformity. The medications that are available may have side affects but not taking them cripples the body ensures severe chronic pain. I am so thankful to live in this time, in this country, so I have access to the medications I need to be able to function and live a long life.

8. Our home. Everything I need is on one floor. When I have an achy painful day I have everything I need without any stairs. We have a big bath tub in our bathroom and I have a huge bag of Epson salts. Soaking in that tub has been wonderful and brings relief. Obviously these are not necessities, but they sure make it all a lot more tolerable.

God is good regardless of my circumstances.

There's lots of reasons really, but one thing I really appreciate about this blog is that writing is cathartic. There's been a lot happening over here and writing about it may help the process :)

Starting back in January my left hip (the sacroiliac joint) began hurting. It was a severe pain that would leave me unable to walk or sit. Laying flat on my back was the only relief. I have had the same pain in the past but only on the right side and only during pregnancies. Since I wasn't pregnant we were slightly befuddled. The pain continued for months so I made an appointment with my general practice doctor.

My appointment was April 1st and she ordered labs and x-rays. She thought I may have a type of auto-immune arthritis that causes your joints to fuse together. She told us we probably wouldn't be able to see much on the x-rays unless the damage was severe. The x-rays showed damage in my sacroiliac joints.

She referred me to a Rheumatologist. I had to wait for 6 weeks to get into her. During that time more joints began to be affected. By the time I finally saw the new doc I was having pain in my hands, feet, neck, both S.I. joints, knees, elbow and my left eye would turn bright red and swell.

Dr. Warner is my Rheumatologist and she is just amazing. She diagnosed me with Psoriatic Arthritis and Spondilitis. PsA is akin to Rheumatoid arthritis. It affects ligaments, tendons, heart, lungs, eyes, skin, nails, stomach, as well as joints.

I have been on medication for 5 weeks. It has been really hard because the symptoms of the disease were still affecting me (it takes weeks for the meds to take effect) and I was suffering from the side effects of the medication (methotrexate, which is a low dose chemotherapy).

During this transition I have been so blessed with friends and family that have similar diagnosis' and understand the emotional impact a chronic illness and diagnosis has. Their love and empathy have been priceless.

I am starting to feel better more each day. The fog of pain is lifting and I can actually identify specific areas that hurt verses just everything hurts.

The hardest part of this has been the emotional toll. I have always been a very productive person and I feel of most value when I can create and do. Spending large swaths of my day in bed has been a significant change for me. I was having a really good day this past Saturday. Low pain and I was able to be very productive and spent the afternoon with a friend and the evening swimming with the kids. I was happy and feeling healthy. That evening I sat down on my bed and realized I had lost a toe nail (a symptom of the disease). All the good of the day drained away and I was left with the reality of what is happening to my body.

It is my goal to be an example to those around me, my family, our church. To be strong and rely on the Hope we have as believers. To trust in God's plan for my life even when I don't understand. I know that up until now I have struggled but I am coming out of the fog. I can manage this with God's grace and my precious family.

I am so thankful for a very patient and loving husband who has been more than willing to help with the kids and to lessen my burden.

This scripture has become a lifeline for me. Thank you Lord for your promises.
There are several products that I have been super stoked about so I thought why not do it again?! So here we go...

-I was a nail biter all of my childhood and off and on throughout adulthood. I have been nail biting free for a few years but never had much in the way of growth until I went gluten free due to my health. Now that I'm absorbing nutrients my nails grow beautifully and I want to paint them! The problem was nothing stays on my nails. Any kind of polish chips and peals away almost instantly. My friend Jenny suggested I try Revlon Color Stay Gel Envy (no light required). I bought one and tried it and had color last for two days. Better but not awesome, so I tried wiping down my nail bed with rubbing alcohol first then painted and it stayed for 3-4 days before chipping. Then I bought the top coat that goes with the polish and got 5 days and changed the polish because I wanted a new color not because it chipped off! Success!!!! Found at Wal-Mart and Target

There are so many colors, I must have them ALL

-While on the topic of all things girlie...Since getting my braces I have felt a new found confidence in my smile. I never wore any kind of lipstick or lip gloss. I didn't really want to draw attention to a source of insecurity. Now I can't get enough and I love love love to wear lipstick. My friend Jenny (the beauty source:)) introduced me to a new idea called lip stain. There are several different brands but the one I have found that stays on literally for 24 hours is Covergirl Outlast All Day Lip Color. This stuff does not come off unless you use makeup remover. It comes with a moisture stick and when you need to freshen up just apply the moisture stick and you're good as new! Ob-sessed... Found at Wal-Mart and Target.
-I have teenage boys. Teenage boys are gross. Teenage boys have acne. My teenage boys have painful acne on their backs. No worries, I found the best product for just such an issue. Acne Free Body Clearing Spray. It's a little pricey (IMO) at $10 a bottle but it works and my boys were really thankful when I brought it home. It works much like continuous spray sunscreen. Just shower, spray on, let dry and viola! I purchased ours at Target.
-I have never been shy of my love for coffee. This last year I have been enjoying KC Roasterie beans. I absolutely love it and I can buys 2.5lbs of it at Sams for $16. I buy a bag a month and I literally look forward to drinking it in my French Press every single morning. I could go downtown and get it directly from the Roasterie but Sams is a mile away and a cheaper. Deliciousness
-I love hair products. Especially stuff that smells amazing and makes my hair soft. I was wandering Home Goods with Alisa while she was looking at hand lotion. I came across this brand I had never heard of, Theorie. I have some Argan Oil that I use as a leave in conditioner and this has argan oil in it so I took off the lid to have a sniff. OH MY WORD. I am madly in love. Every shower is like aromatherapy and my hair is so soft. I use the orange which is the Ultimate Hair Reform. I have been able to find this at T J Max and Home Goods.
-My sister, Heather, came to visit in October. She has red hair to her waist. I had my hair uber long for a decade but cut it a couple years ago due to health issues. Even though my hair has recovered and is super healthy, I hadn't let it grow back out. After spending a week with her and her long red locks the desire to grow mine back out has returned. I started doing some research on vitamins and found rave reviews for Ultra Hair Nourish from GNC. I purchased a bottle and within two weeks I started noticing new hair growth. After a month my hair had grown two inches and was significantly thicker due to all the new growth. I told Jenny and she is having the same response. If you want to add thickness or length to your hair (it also has a huge impact on my nails) I highly recommend. I purchased at GNC at the Legends but is available online through Amazon.
-We have 5 kids, 2 cats, and a dog. 4 of those kids are stinky boys. I found these Glade Automatic Air fresheners and I put several of them throughout the house. We have one at the front door, one in our bedroom, one each of the boys' bedrooms and one in the living room downstairs. They take a generic sized aerosol can that comes in a variety of scents. I tend to grab refills at Sams because they're the most affordable. Right now our fresheners are sporting Air Wick's Enchanted Holiday. I typically have some sort of clean laundry scent. They send a puff of goodness out into the air at timed intervals. Ours can be set for every 9, 18, or 36 minutes. This keeps our house smelling lovely and less like a herd of people and animals live here ;)
-My husband is a nerd. He loves to research things. When he got his truck a couple years ago he set out to find the perfect phone mount. He wanted something to hold his phone that would stay put and didn't look like he made it in craft class. After much research he decided on ProClip. They are custom made to your make and model of vehicle. They snap into place and match the dash board so it looks as though it is meant to be there. He has had his for a couple years but this year insisted I get one for my suburban since I now have the massive iPhone 6+. I was hesitant, just didn't see the necessity but now that I've had it a week or so I absolutely love it. This makes navigation amazing and no phones slipping around the car during turns. These have to be ordered online from Po-Clip USA.

I spent time with him in the summers but even in the July heat he would start a fire in his fire pit and we would sit a comfortable distance and gaze into it while eat Pizza Hut pizza on a Friday night.

We would always have a fire when we would camp. In fact, he started a fire in order to cook my very first rainbow trout. It was the only fish we caught but he cleaned it and prepared it just for me.

I have always desired a fireplace and when we moved into this house I was giddy to finally have one. The problem is, it's a gas fireplace meant for aesthetics only. Our utilities here are so high already, I couldn't justify running it just for looks.

My friend Katie R. suggested we install a blower because they had and really enjoy it.

So I set out to find more information. I watched a YouTube video and read up on our specific fireplace. It is compatible with a blower and even has a plug in for power. YAY!

I shopped a little and found a great deal in an eBay store. $60 delivered.

It came today.
I wasn't expecting to have to wire it. Fortunately it wasn't too terribly difficult and only took and extra 10-15 minutes.

I took the front off the fireplace in order to clean the glass. It needed it and looks so much better. The blower actually installs underneath. I had my coffee and my laptop, tools of the trade.

It's really surprising how dusty/dirty this whole process was. That dark pile near on the carpet near the fireplace was insulation that had dropped onto the logs at some point. It was burnt but not burned up. Bizarre.

Everything installed and put back together. Now for the wait. The blower has a heat sensor that doesn't allow the blower to start until the fireplace is 120 degrees. That felt like an eternity!! I was desperate to know if I had done it all right. Within about 10 minutes there was a faint hum and warm air began flowing from the top vent. I was so excited I welled up. YAYAYAYAY!!! A functional fireplace with purpose.

The kids are as excited as I am. Anneliese came and sat down to enjoy the warmth so Brennan decided to sit on her lap and tell her all he wanted for Christmas. We were all cackling. The only thing I heard on his list was a potato.

I am so thankful. Such a small thing, but so meaningful to me. Makes my heart warm on this cool morning.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09700969966219017383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8124553184820376156.post-6709383118413258272014-10-23T19:32:00.003-05:002014-10-23T19:32:44.108-05:00Aunt Heather! My sister, Heather, came to visit us for the first time in our adult lives! We tried to fit in everything we could possibly think of. We even had a list and checked things off as we went. We did sisterly stuff like painting nails, braiding hair, and trading jeans. The kids had so much fun getting to know and love Aunt Heather. As an engaged professional woman I'm pretty sure our crazy brood was a bit of a culture shock but she was great and held her own.

Thank you so much for taking a week to come share in our life.
He has been in such a season of stress and exhaustion that he mentioned to me a couple months ago that he would really like to have a "retreat" of sorts on his birthday.

It was all super hush hush. I had no idea what he had planned, I just knew how much money needed to be set aside for our adventure. As the weeks passed it became very clear that our retreat was very much a gift for me, not for him.

I often say, "where did he come from?" Such a special gift of selflessness to plan a getaway for your spouse on your own birthday.

On Wednesday night Grandma and Grandpa took the 5 kids to their place after church. Jared and I headed to Casa Agave (I lurve that place) for a late dinner.

Thursday morning we headed to a super cool place down by UMKC called Succotash. Jared is a creature of habit and once he finds something he likes he tends to stick to what is safe. I think the biggest part of this surprise is that every experience was something brand new. I was so touched by his willingness to not only plan this for me, but to go outside his comfort zone to find something new and special for me. He picked Succotash because they have gluten free blueberry pancakes. They were delicious! Such an awesome little place.
After breakfast we went to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Neither of us had ever been and it is really very neat. We spent hours wandering the halls and looking at priceless art. It was fascinating to us that all of it was original works. Nothing was a reproduction. There was a painting of Jesus with the crown of thorns and He was crying. It was haunting, so life like. Just amazing. I highly recommend going, it's free other than $8 for parking.
After we left the Art Museum we wandered The Plaza for a little while since there was a break in the rain. We went to the Apple Store to visit our future phones... I still had no idea where we were staying for the night. Jared made a quick call to see if we could get an early check in and off we went, destination unknown.

We pulled into this tiny driveway of a beautiful house down by The Plaza. There was a beautiful sign in the yard that read "Southmoreland An Urban Inn." He started to tell me the history of the beautiful home while we walked around to the entrance. We were greeted by a super friendly young lady who gave us run of the place since we were the only ones there. I immediately teared up. It was so beautiful and just not anything we had ever done before. Our room had no TV and no wifi (there is wifi in the house, it just didn't reach our room). It was truly a place of rest.
Thursday night we went to New Theatre with tickets we've held onto for months. It was so nice and dinner was amazing. We sat with total strangers that were the sweetest couple.

Friday morning we just lounged around the Bed and Breakfast checking out at the very last minute. The last stop he had planned was lunch at Minsky's pizza. They have a certified gluten free kitchen so I ordered an amazing pizza and cried as I tried to express my love and gratitude for such a special 24 hours.

Ministry is hard. It can be very exhausting. Parenting is hard. It can be very exhausting. Life in general is hard. It can be very exhausting. But God is good regardless of our circumstances and taking a "time out" to focus on each other and our relationship/friendship was exactly what we needed. I am so blessed. Happy Birthday to a very special man. I love you Jared Richard and I thank God for you every single day.
It was originally painted apple green to match Liesey's room. Since that is now the office, the green looked pretty out of place. Our hope is having that restroom adjacent to the office, it would be used primarily for guests vs being Anneliese's bathroom.
I remember his being the longest pregnancy known to man. I so desperately wanted to be a mom. What a blessing he is. He is such an affectionate, kind, intelligent young man of conviction. We couldn't be prouder. He started his first job and is working towards earning his very first compound bow. He has wanted a job since he was 12. I love his work ethic and desire to work and earn the things he wants/desires. I just love love love that kid. Happy Birthday Brennan!
-We've been schooling all 5 for about 2 months now and it is the best year we've had by far. Jared has really increased his involvement and I couldn't be more thankful. He has taken on the lion share of the grading (a tedious task I avoided at all cost). On his days off of work he insists on doing the bulk of the teaching allowing me an extra day off. This is our second year of using the Robinson Curriculum and it is going much smoother now that we have a little experience under our belt.

-Liesey K Cakes was insanely busy over the summer months and has actually slowed to a much more manageable pace this fall. I am super thankful with school to have a lesser work load but still steady to help with bills and building our emergency fund. I had no idea what a blessing creating that Facebook business page would be to our family. God is so good!
-Jared's Birthday is Saturday and he has planned a two day stay-cation for he and I. The kids are headed to grandma and grandpa's and that's about the extent of my knowledge. He has a planned a surprise and I'm so excited. We have been married 18 years and I really do have to say it just gets better every year. Who plans a surprise for their spouse on their own birthday?! -Our summer vacation and stop in Grand Junction to see my siblings is proving to be a gift that keeps on giving. My sister, Heather, is coming to spend a week with us soon. We are so excited and counting down the days. Staying in a house with 5 kids may prove to be a bit of a culture shock for her :)

I don't think anyone can understand the commitment this man has to the church but his family.

We see him sad after hours of counseling.

We see him happy when people reunite and reconcile.

We see the sadness and empathy pouring from his pores after the someone suffers the death of a loved one. The emotional fatigue that sweeps over him while he loves on those who mourn and prepares for a funeral that will help bring closure to those who remain.

We are witness to the faint light in the office during the early morning hours as he puts final touches on his sermons and Sunday school lessons.

He loves you, he prays for you, he weeps with you and for you. God has granted him an extra dose of empathy and sympathy to make him an effective minister.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. As his wife, I ask that this October you would say an extra prayer for him. Prayers for God to sustain him, fill him, grant him rest. When you see him, bless him with words of encouragement.

He doesn't desire gifts, he doesn't desire accolades, he is content serving where he knows he is called.

Just so you know.

He's pretty ridiculous.

Angus T. Altic AKA Gus Gus, has been a part of our family for a little over 2 years. If I am completely honest, I have to admit he was not always my favorite.

He was the hardest dog to house train and non house trained animals are the bane of my existence.

BUT, he is trained now and we finally found a solution to his constant crying at night and kennel anxiety. We contain him to the workout room and he does much better.

He really is a sweet little creature, he just had some hiccups but I think we're past all that.

Our friend Heidi is a groomer and we take Gus to her once every 3-4 months. She typically threatens to keep him due to his passive sweet self. This time she took before and after pics of our fluffer nutter.

Quick side note, I have always called him my little fluffer nutter and Tanner was convinced that was his breed and he was not impressed to find out it was a phrase I made up. Especially after he was confident he was right and desperate to convince his cousins. Ha!

So here's our little fluff before Heidi's magic:
I have always envied them and felt like it was a great idea but my day to day is so full I was just sure there was no way to fit in another thing. Let alone planning meals for 2 weeks to a month.

Wellllll, when you have 5 kids they sure do seem to want to eat all the time. Every day even, multiple times a day and they are all super curious about what that food may be. So curious in fact, that they ask....a lot... When you have 5 (6 when it's dinner time) asking what we are eating multiple times each...well you can imagine it makes mommy a bit stabby. Meal planning started to sound more like a sanity saver than a time taker.

I decided to do a pay period at a time. My first meal plan is for two weeks and we started Monday. I wrote out a ridiculous list of grocery items and collected it all from Wal-Mart, Sams, and Aldi. I am hoping that menu planning will not only remove the constant badgering of what is for lunch/dinner, but will also save us from multiple trips to the store and eating out due to frustration or lack of planning.

Week 1:
Monday Grilled Cheese Homemade Pizza
Tuesday Totinos Pizzas Chicken and Dumplings
Wednesday Mac&Cheese Wednesday Church
Thursday Sandwiches Beef Enchiladas
Friday Hot dogs teriyaki chicken
Saturday waffles Chicken tacos
Sunday out to eat Bierocks

Week 2:
Monday Pigs in a Blanket Chicken tacos
Tuesday Mac & Cheese Spaghetti meatballs
Wednesday Sandwiches Wednesday Church
Thursday hot dogs homemade pizza
Friday grilled cheese BBQ meatballs &fried potatoes
Saturday Totinos pizzas Hamburger helper
Sunday out to lunch waffles

We have already learned sometimes switching one day or one meal for another helps. For example Monday I went to Savers for their 50% off sale and Jared was home with the kids. He decided to let them make the Totinos pizzas (Tuesdays Meal) vs grilled cheese. Since they had little frozen pizzas for lunch they didn't want homemade pizza for dinner so we just switched the whole day. It worked out great.

I haven't been to the store since Saturday (when I was getting groceries for the pay period). That is huge! I even made sure I had all I needed for upcoming baking orders. That alone will save us money. I'm hopeful this will get easier and we'll come up with better meals and new recipes as we go but for a first time experience it's a success!

I have had several people ask "why" I have braces and comment that they never noticed a "problem" before.

Let's start with the "why."

I never had any kind of orthodontic care as a kid. I have always had a small pallet/gummy smile and honestly didn't think too much of it until the last few years as the kids of started their ortho care. Some unfiltered people have asked me why so much of my gums show when I smile. Brennan told me that there were people at camp "like you mom" meaning that they had a whole lot of gum show when they smiled. I've never been someone to draw attention to my mouth with lipstick or want my picture taken. To be completely honest, I went in for a free consult out of curiosity and insecurity about my mouth/smile. What started out as a hope for cosmetic improvement became a blessing just in the nick of time.

The "problems" were numerous.

One of the reasons my pallet appeared so small was because my teeth rolled in and laid almost completely on their sides causing decay and wear at the base of my teeth near the gum line. I was on track to lose my molars in the near future due to the inappropriate wear and tear. I also found out that I had a cross bite that was causing deterioration in my right jaw joint. I have been plagued with a loud heartbeat in my right ear for years and couldn't find the cause. The cross bite was causing such extreme inflammation in the joint, my body was sending blood to the inflammation to help heal it. The beating can be so loud it affects my hearing.

I wish I could say the heartbeat and jaw pain were gone but the damage was bad enough it won't ever go away completely. It is better and we know that it won't continue to degenerate and that's a blessing.

I had several consults and several opinions of what to do to fix the different issues each doctor felt was necessary. One doc wanted to break and reshape my nose due to a deviated septum and shave down the mandible (the bone your top teeth are attached to) and break it expanding my pallet, which would leave me eating soft foods for 3-5 months. After all of that, he wanted to do braces. I was very overwhelmed and worried I wouldn't even look like me after all of that. I understood it would help my breathing and sinus issues but it really felt like too much. After a few more consults and couple other crazy ideas, we prayed and felt like addressing the dental issue was sufficient. The sinus and pallet issues were not affecting my day to day and while they could be fix, they didn't need to be fixed.

Here is a picture of me before side by side with a current picture. I am so thankful every day for my braces at 37 years old. My teeth are healthy and this care has insured I will have them for decades to come. I am looking at another 6 months to a year of changes and tweaks. I can't wait to see the finished product.

This office space (where I currently write) is an incredible blessing. While on our epic road trip this summer we had hours upon hours to chat and discuss this and that. I brought up the idea of switching rooms sooner rather than later. We have this pipe dream that someday we will remove all the carpet (remember the pet damage??) on the main floor and replace it with hardwood or a nice laminate. We figured by the time we would be able to financially take on such a project one or more of the boys would have moved out and we could move Anneliese downstairs to one of the existing bedrooms and turn the upstairs bedroom into an office with matching hardwood floors. I had the idea of making the odd space downstairs a bedroom and creating the office now so we could benefit from it sooner.

Jared was intrigued by the idea and after much discussion about removing those sliding glass doors, removing the drafty ill fitting exterior door in the downstairs space (not wanting the girl to escape), we realized it was actually a pretty great idea.

In true Shannon fashion, as soon as we arrived home from vacation, I hit the ground running.

Here is the best pic I could find of her room upstairs before the office transformation. It was slightly different right before we moved her just because she has a different bed, but you get the idea.
Such a difficult room to photograph due to the wall color. All we have left is to frame in the map. If I could use one word to describe it it would be "soothing." We all love it. We do school in there every weekday. Jared has already spent countless hours working in a comfortable space with his shoes off and in the comfort of his own home. A door shuts easily for privacy and the guest bath right outside the door makes this just a perfect space for both personal and professional use. I am so glad we didn't wait another minute. We absolutely love it. This room of the house was the worst off when we bought it. The sliding glass doors allowed it to be completely shut off from the rest of the house. It had such a horrendous smell of dog urine that we had to open the windows and exterior door (which is now removed) and let it air out before we could even enter it.
A whole lot of bleach and several mopping sessions made it inhabitable. Even still, we didn't really use it for anything but storage and a place for the dog's kennel. I don't have a single "before" pic of the room as we used it. I can only assume it's because we never really knew what to even call it. It was such an odd space and not one I never decorated it or used it daily.
Due to the sliding glass doors, the home appraiser when we purchased the house wouldn't allow this 13'x15' room to count towards our square footage. Not only was it weird and hard to explain, but it didn't increase the value of our home. The odd space actually decreased the value.

After a lot of hard work and very little money, we have a wonderful space that she LOVES. We are so thankful to Richard for helping so much. Anneliese loves her "princess doors" and still thanks us regularly for her new room and is SUPER eager to give a tour to anyone who visits.
After all that, I was actually sad her first night down there. The empty room upstairs served as a reminder that she was no longer an infant or toddler needing to be near mom and dad. Instead she is a big girl, in a big room, downstairs with all the big kids :)

We bought this house 3 years ago October. If you were to come over and take a tour today you would see very little evidence of abandoned house we found in a neighborhood we didn't realize even existed.

This house was cursed, plagued with rumor and speculation. We were in a desperate place needing housing since our house had sold and the home we intended to move into fell through. 4 days...we had 4 days to evacuate the house we poured our heart and souls into and move into...storage units...Mom and Dad's? We didn't know what we were going to do, but God did.

I found this house on a new listing of homes available in our area and it had all kinds of problems including claims of foundation trouble and crazy cracks in the sheet rock to back it up, and serious pet damage. Had we not been in such dire straights we never would have even looked.

After much prayer, wisdom from our Elders, and multiple foundation experts, we decided to go ahead and the seller allowed immediately occupancy. Due to the possible foundation issues and a seller that was on the verge of foreclosure, we were able to purchase the house for 1/2 of it's value. The house checked out, the rumors and speculation were wrong, the pet damage was repairable and we have been so incredibly blessed and thankful every day we've been fortunate enough to live here.

This house has it quirks like most. We had a set of sliding glass doors downstairs that separated the living room from a space that was tiled and sheet rocked. It was obvious the addition was added after the house was built in 2006, but not much after. The siding and windows all matched the rest of the house. This room became a storage space of sorts. We called it the office but never really used it as such.

With homeschooling and Jared's ministry and my baking business, we decided to move Anneliese's bedroom down to this unused space and create a family office on the main floor (next to the front door) figuring it would get far more use. I have always struggled with unused space. If God has granted it, we should use it. So we took this bizarre addition and created a little girls dream space, and created a beautiful office space for the family that has been in constant use since we completed it.

Like most large families, we live on every penny we make. So doing this switch was going to be a delicate dance. Jared and I use the term "budget neutral." Basically, we need to be able to sell things currently occupying the space in order to purchase things needed for the new space. In the next two blogs you will see the office and Anneliese's room, the total cost of BOTH rooms was $67 due to frugal second hand shopping and selling things that were no longer needed.

In the end, we took a house that no one wanted and have created a beautiful home that we feel so privileged to own. We have taken odd/awkward spaces in the house and created usable space that has increased the value.

It is just a house, I haven't lost sight of that. I would put it on the market tomorrow if God called us away, but while we are here, I will do my best to be a good steward of the blessings He grants.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09700969966219017383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8124553184820376156.post-36182935214321213352014-07-23T22:38:00.001-05:002014-07-23T22:38:11.471-05:00Speaking Love to the LittlesI started reading a new book today that was recommended by my sweet Alisa.

The 5 Love Languages of Children by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell.

One of our children has a tough time expressing himself and it often comes out in anger and frustration so Alisa thought this book may shed some light on how to better show and receive love from our angry little bear (my words not hers).

As I read through the first several chapters it was very clear that a couple of our kids most definitely show and receive love through touch.

Graham is very physically affectionate but he is also very clumsy. So he will come running at me full speed for a hug or kiss and crack me in the nose or hug me so tight around the waist that he knocks me off balance. I often will deflect his advances for fear of injury. After reading I realized I need to initiate bear hugs, wrestling, pats on the shoulder, rubs on the head and the like to really speak to his little self.

Brennan is also shows and receives love through touch. He always flops down next to me and lays his head on my shoulder. He loves to be hugged even in front of friends. He'll even hold my hand in the middle of Wal-mart. I'm going to have to work on allowing them to show me love through touch and also showing them love that way. It is not my love language, and I actually really struggle with it.

Tanner I'm still figuring out. But he definitely seems to respond to quality time.

As I'm working through the kids and trying to learn to love them better, I decided to ask them "How do you know I love you?"

Graham said, "Because you tell me billions of times a day" This shows that he also feels loved through words of affirmation.

Brennan said, "because you work so hard and do nice things for us" That is acts of service, my favorite way to show love. Fortunately he sees that as love and not just busyness.

Tanner told me he feels loved "because you tell me all the time and you take us neat places" That is words of affirmation and quality time.

Anneliese said, "because you tell me and kiss me and you're my mommy" Words of affirmation and touch.

Elijah said, "Why...why are you asking? WHY WHY WHY???"

Ugh...the main kid I'm reading the book for and I get nuttin'. Stink pot, guess I better keep reading.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09700969966219017383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8124553184820376156.post-12734056244745019672014-07-12T14:43:00.003-05:002014-07-12T15:18:19.400-05:00Beach Bathroom RedoOne of the biggest blessings of moving into this house is that we went from one shower to three. For a family of 7, sharing one bathroom was a huge inconvenience and as the kids grew it would just have become a bigger issue.

The kids bathroom downstairs was one of the last rooms to receive some attention. We've been here almost 3 years and it didn't even have a mirror above the sink until about 2 months ago. It's been neglected and gross honestly. The boys didn't mind, they loved having their own space.

While they were gone this week I decided to give it some much needed attention. Here are some pics of it when we purchased the house. This is a huge bathroom with a stand alone shower. It's such a blessing!
I've never been shy of my love of the ocean. I was 32 before I ever laid eyes on it and I've been in awe ever since. It beckons me. I was so in awe of God's majesty the first time I saw it I literally cried. So I decided to make the boys bathroom a little reminder.

I started by painting the walls a beautiful blue that reminded me of the sky. The tile is a perfect "sand." We made markers with arrows that accurately direct you to the closest beach (notice how insanely far!) Total Cost: $16 1 gallon of paint; $5 for surf board rug; $13 for lumber; $5 for teal paint and a couple paint sponges. Not bad for $39! The boys were giddy.

Jared insisted that we go and I really felt underwhelmed by the idea. I'm so thankful he won out because it was really neat.

We went in and watched the movie explaining the how and the why. My favorite part was the original artist had 10 children and even though they had been offered 10 million dollars from the government on two separate occasions, they turned it down both times. They wanted to do the project privately and it is completely funded by donations and the proceeds of tourism.

The kids loved the video. They showed the dynamite and explosions. They were fascinated!

After Crazy Horse we tried to take scenic Needles Highway (see youtube video) over to Mt. Rushmore.

Unfortunately for us, a RV was just convinced the rules didn't apply to him and he went through and got his RV stuck in one of the tiny tunnels and we were forced to turn back.

So we turned around and headed to Mt. Rushmore on the main highway and unfortunately came from behind the mountain so the Presidents appeared in our rear view mirror as we made our way around the front of the mountain. Regardless, it was beautiful and we all really enjoyed it. We decided to take advice from our friend Ryan M. and treated the family to the best ice cream we've ever tasted. We had Thomas Jefferson's original recipe for vanilla ice cream. Very much worth the cost. DELICIOUS!

We arrived in the evening on Wednesday and the town was super quaint and the scenery was beautiful. We stayed in a Comfort Inn that was brand new and had the nicest amenities. There was a tiny little water fall right by the parking lot and the rooms were beautiful. We were very impressed since our family stayed there for only $99.

Thursday morning we met up with Dustin (Jared's brother) and his family. They made a stop in Deadwood on their way to Montana. Their vacation was just beginning as ours was coming to a close.

We spent the morning wandering around downtown and visiting the little shops. Jared and I enjoy the history of the town and actually have watched documentaries and read quite a bit about it so that was neat for us. Unfortunately, the history is one of brothels, outlaws, murder and the like. I wouldn't exactly call Deadwood "child friendly." There were slot machines in every building and there were shops named after brothels.

We ate lunch in a neat Diner that was located in the town's very first gas station. I tried bison which was very good!

We stopped in at the Adam's Museum. That was fascinating, and the kids actually really enjoyed all the information and pictures.
I'm sure during this vaca and the postings after I've lost more than a few Facebook friends due to the constant barrage. It's okay, I know there's some family (my mom) and church members (Jared's mom) enjoying this.

After being in Yellowstone all day we headed to Cody, Wyoming. On the drive we decided to see where we were on our budget. We were way under on food due to the generosity of family (Steve, Ron, Vicki, Heather and Travis). So we decided to treat the kids. We stopped at a BBQ place just inside Cody and let each of them order what they wanted off the menu. No sharing, no splitting fry orders. You would've thought it were Christmas morning. With full bellies and exhausted bodies we checked into our hotel and crashed.

Next stop, Devil's Tower. This is the mountain that was in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Jared's favorite movie of all time. It was super cool. We hiked 1.3 miles around it's base. The kids were pretty fascinated by it. Enjoy a few pics :)
